Burkina Faso Project
Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in west Africa which shares borders with Mali, Ivory Coast Togo, and Nigeria and has a population of 13.4 million and U.N's development programme report it as the fourth poorest in the world.
85% of the population live below the poverty line of less than £1.60 per day.
50% of children under the age of 16 work often full time and often in filthy, difficult and very dangerous conditions such as mining where children are used to tunnel and plant explosives and also working in pits helping their often single parent where they have to break rocks with little equipment from dusk till dawn.
The literacy rate is 28.7 which is the third lowest in the World.
There is little investment in education and children who have the privilege of attending school, often do so in classes of over 100 of mixed ages. Learning is often by Rota and there is little opportunity for physical activity or hands on learning.
IPELCE ORPHANAGE - Situated in a remote little part of Burkina Faso and provides refuge to over 150 young children and before our involvement has received only little support and in desperate need of help.
IPELCE PRIMARY SCHOOL - Our hope is that the children here too can benefit from our SCF young leaders who with funding will be able spend more time working with the children implementing our ITS programme and offering much needed support to the few teachers without hardly any training themselves, do a fantastic job in trying to educate the many hundreds of children who are fortunate enough to be able attend.
BEII SONGO NURSERY - is another place that we have been able to impact and holds a special place in the hearts our SCF volunteers who were out there recently.
SCF provided integrated sessions, educational resources, toys and sports equipment.
The nursery was set up to ensure the children can be nurtured in a safe environment away from the rock breaking pits where families have to work from dusk till dawn to earn as little as £1.20p a day.
The hope long term is to increase the size of the nursery ensuring more children can benefit from this wonderful sanctuary.
This year was the first year we took a team of volunteers out to see our work in progress and the children whose lives we are trying to transform. Here is what some of the volunteers had to say about their experience with us;
" its been one of the best experiences of my life, seeing the work going on there is unbelievable and it also really hits home how lucky we are here. Children have so little but are so friendly and just simply playing, laughing and having fun with hundreds of children was very special and something that will stay with me forever, can't wait to come back next year." - Freddie De'ath owner of Fit4Kids, Cambridgeshire
"Going to Burkina Faso changed my outlook on life completely, it made me see the beauty in everything and how together we can make a difference. I urge everyone to show support and make a brighter future for all children." - Samantha Bromfield from Barclays, Cambridgeshire
Sports Connections Foundation Co-Founder, Junior McDougald added "Through our ITS programme we are desperately trying to help steer children away from a life of poverty. We want to see children at Ipelce orphanage, primary school and Beii Songo nursery, receive continued support, the chance to access sport and education as well as enjoying provisions of food and adequate healthcare.
With your help slowly but surely we can build more sustainable projects that will begin to transform communities and the lives of so many children here.
We want to keep providing opportunities for children like Micah to have fun, to enjoy an actual childhood and provide them with a genuine hope for the future"
